We call him dad, daddy, papa, pops, father, apay, and a lot more. In fact, Oxford has found 10 synonyms for the word “FATHER” which is quite amazing because it only shows that despite having a lot of names for the one who matters to us, we know that it’s a universal thing on how much we appreciate and value the times that he has defended us, disciplined us, taught us to ride a bike, and gave us countless advice on how to deal with defeat.
And yes, by now, you probably have an idea on who I’m talking about. It’s not just because it’s Father’s Day that we remember our fathers, but the reality is that our fathers are often misunderstood or ignored at times because they don’t usually show that much emotion or affection. One that we know as having a “tough exterior but possesses a gentle and a soft side” beneath all the masculinity.
So let’s take a peek on how Father’s Day came about — its origins and how it became a day to honor the man who has made a great impact in our lives:
Father’s Day Origin
According to history, the first Father’s Day was celebrated in the state of Washington on June 19, 1910, to celebrate fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in our society. Yet, did you know that it was only in 1972 that it became a nationwide holiday in the US? That’s 58 years after making Mother’s Day an official holiday!
The most probable reason why it took so long for the campaign to get acknowledged was that it was not given that much enthusiasm–as one florist stated, “fathers don’t have the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.”
So, this explained the expression that I gave earlier. Fathers are often seen as a tough guy with a strong appearance that will never back down on any fight. But, little do we know that our dads are humans too and that they also have fears, happiness, sorrows, and they also have something to laugh about.
Since Father’s Day is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June, this years’ day to acknowledge our fathers will be on June 17, 2018. That’s only two more days to go for the big event or you could just prepare a little something to show your appreciation for “The Man of the Day”.
What To Get on Father’s Day?
It doesn’t really matter if you’re planning to go big or just have a little “Thank You” card to give to your dad as long as it’s from the heart. Because it’s not every day that we are given a chance to show how much we love and value what our fathers have done for us.
If you’re thinking of having a more personal approach, there are lots of DIYs to try out or better yet, you could try to know his interests or hobbies and get him an item or two in order to add to his collection or set of tools.
And what’s more, you can even search online for great deals and discounts on various items that your dad might have been longing for. You can also check out these amazing deals and quality items here.
To Wrap Up:
We know how truly exciting it is to celebrate and prepare for a surprise that we can give our fathers on their special day. But let’s not get overwhelmed on the party itself and remember the meaning and the purpose of that event.
It’s not every day that we are able to thank them and not all of us will get the chance to do that because some may already have passed away while others may not have even known their fathers. Still, despite the harsh realities of life, we must stay positive and look on the brighter side. Because even if we didn’t know them, we still have father figures who in one way or another, have contributed to the person that we are today.
