Importance Of Finding Solutions To Battle Against Opioid Crisis

Understanding The Severity of Opioid Crisis

Once you’re hooked on something, it’s often too hard to go back on your previous lifestyle.

There’s a truth behind this sentence similar to the line of a song that goes

“too much of something is bad enough…”

May it be alcohol, caffeine, or the dreaded drugs, addiction is a serious problem. And it does not only affect the physical body. But also your social, mental, and your entire family’s well-being.

We now tackle one of the most disturbing issues in the US which claimed the lives of over 300,000 Americans since the year 2000. Opioid overdose has been an epidemic because of the severe effects it brings to different communities across various states.

Understanding The Severity of Opioid Crisis

An opioid crisis is something that should not be taken lightly similar to other health issues such as the topic about acquiring STD. It’s not just because it’s a long-standing issue but also, people should get more information, facts, and a better understanding of the severity of this condition. Since opioid drugs can easily be bought over-the-counter as pain medications, this makes it so easy for people to rely on taking the meds even with the slightest feeling of pain. When taking the drug becomes a habit, it eventually leads to addiction as the body becomes more tolerant to pain and needs more doses of that drug to experience the intended effects of the drug.

The opioid epidemic or opioid crisis as stated by Wikipedia is the rapid increase in the use of prescription and non-prescription opioid drugs in the US and Canada beginning in the late 1990s and continuing throughout the next two decades. Opioids are a diverse class of moderately strong painkillers, including oxycodone – trade names OxyContin and Percocet, hydrocodone or Vicodin. The opioid is a strong painkiller, fentanyl, which is synthesized to resemble other opiates such as opium-derived morphine and heroin.

Crucial Steps In Fighting The Prevalence of Opioid Crisis

In 2016 there were over 63,600 overdose deaths in the United States, which includes 42,249 that involved opioids (66.4%). That’s an average of 115 opioid overdose deaths each day! That’s why it’s vital to put an end to this nightmare. In order to stop the further loss of lives and help build a safer and a better future for America.

For the good of the masses, here are the steps in fighting against opioid crisis:

  1. We must first accept and admit that addiction is a disease and that treatment should be prioritized over incarceration and arrest.
  2. Help support and expand treatment centers.
  3. Implement better prescription guidelines to avoid the irresponsible use of pain meds.
  4. Provide more education to the younger generations to adopt a holistic approach to alleviate chronic pain.
  5. Stand together to demand change and fight for your cause.

Overall, we understand that speaking is a lot easier than doing the actual steps to fight against opium addiction. Along the way, it will not be as smooth as it goes because of opioid withdrawal symptoms that may occur.

The person under treatment may experience nausea, muscle cramping, depression, agitation, anxiety, and recurring opiate cravings. But through all these, what we can do to help is to give them the best support, consideration, and understanding.

We may offer them a prayer or help them in joining Christian communities. In here, they will feel accepted to overcome their days of darkness. They can be guided spiritually towards getting on the path of righteousness.
